Remises in Buenos Aires

Remises in Buenos Aires

Remís are chauffeur-driven cars that operate in much the same way as taxis. They’re very common in Argentina and Uruguay, especially in small towns where taxis are rare.

The remises emerged in the middle of the 20th century as a result of the budding nightlife in Argentina when private cars started to offer rides outside theatres.

Differences

Remises are different from taxis in three ways:

  • The remises don't have a specific color or distinguishing features.
  • Remises don't have a meter. The prices are determined in advance according to the route.
  • Remises can't stop on the street to pick up passengers. They must be booked by phone or at a remisería.

Remises are considered by many to be a higher quality of transport than taxis and the vehicles are generally in better condition. Fares tend to be similar.
