Buenos Aires Zoo
Located next to the Plaza de Italia in the pleasant Palermo neighbourhood, the Buenos Aires Zoo was home to more than 2,500 animals for 142 years.
In June 2016, animal advocates saw the results of a successful campaign and the zoo was closed for good so it could be turned into an interactive Ecopark.
Former residents
The zoo occupied a large area of land where 89 species of mammals, 49 types of reptiles and 175 species of birds lived together.
In its facilities, you could see different animals such as anteaters, grizzly bears, bison, antelopes, hippopotamuses, pumas, kangaroos, lions, camels, giraffes, rhinos, orangutans, ostriches, zebras, hyenas and deer.
There are plans for 50 animals to remain in the future Ecopark, as moving them would put their lives at risk.
Mateos
At the weekend, the zoo’s entrance is the meeting place for Mateos. The Mateos are the horse-drawn carriages that people can take around the Plaza de Italia and the beautiful Palermo Woods, which is also known as the Tres de Febrero Park.
